PLANT CRITTERS
Finding Creatures on a White Sheet


Purpose: To improve the student's abilities in observation, To expand the student's understanding of creatures in their natural environment.
Season: Fall, spring, or summer and warm winter days.
Materials: Old white sheet or other white material, Small tree, bush or annual plant.
Optional: containers and hand­lens.
TEKS: K.2A,B,C,D,E    K.3A,B     K.4A,B    K.5A,C
Procedures:
  1. Divide the students into small groups.
  2. Put the sheet on the ground beside bushes or other medium­sized vegetation.
  3. Lean the plant leaves and stems over the sheet and shake them.
  4. Watch the creatures that fall onto the sheet.
  5. Let the children check if there are leaves and other debris from the plants or the real critters.
  6. Optional: Have the students collect the animals from the sheet using the small containers. Using hand­lens, the students can observe and determine how many different kinds of animals are present.
  7. Release the animals when finished.
Questions:
  1. What creatures do you see? (Spiders, insects, worm-like and etc.)
  2. How are these creatures alike?
  3. How are these creatures different?
  4. How many creatures are on the the sheet (total)?
  5. How many creatures are there in each category?
