What’s running your home?

 

Purpose:

 

The student will discover that many of the items that they take for granted in their homes are run by some type of energy source,

 

Objectives:

 

As a result of this activity, the student will:

1. Compare items that requires activity.

 

2. Determine that importance of an energy source in the running of their daily lives.

 

Materials:

 

Butcher paper divided into categories:

Electricity

Batteries

Solar

 

TEKS:

5.1A,B    5.2A,B,C,D     5.3A    5.7A    5.8A,C

 

Procedure:

 

1. Have the students work in groups to brainstorm items that are in their bedroom that would fall into each of the categories listed above.

 

2. Discuss and list items for each of the categories on the butcher paper chart. Note: You may have to help them with things in the solar category. One good example is a calculator.

 

3. Write down two advantages of using batteries, two advantages for using electricity, and two advantages for using solar energy.

 

4. Some things may use a combination of energy resources such as a clock radio with battery back up systems. Place a star by these items on your list.

 

5. What other things do you have at home that uses electricity? Write down five examples.

 

Questions:

 

1. Which energy source do we use the most in our homes?

2. Why do you think we use electricity more than any other type of energy source?

3. What would you not be able to do if your home lost electricity?
