Matchmaking: Flowering Plants and Their Pollinators

A Middle School Curriculum Module

SUMMARY:

Students will describe characteristics of flowers and their pollinators which allow them to help each other diversify and survive.

CONNECTION TO THE CURRICULUM:

Students will understand that living organisms depend on each other for their survival, and that adaptations increase the chances for survival.

TIME:

This module will take two-three weeks.

SEASON:

This module is best used during the Spring.

OBJECTIVES:

1. The student will be able to identify all parts of a flower.

2. The student will be able to explain the reproductive process of flowers.

3. The student will be able to describe the processes of variation, adaptation, and natural selection.

4. The student will be able to identify characteristics of flowers and their pollinators which are co-adaptive.

5. The student will be able to explain the relationship between hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and moths and the flower types that they pollinate.
