LESSON 2
Unit:
Wetlands
Lesson:
Needs of Life
Instructional Goal:
Students will identify the basic needs for survival
Materials:
Overhead, chalk board or large chart paper; journals
TEKS:
2.2A,B,C,E,F 2.3A,B,C 2.8A,B 2.9A,B
Procedure:
Review ecosystems.
List on large chart things each system had in common (animals, plants, animal homes, space, source of water).
Distinguish between the living and non-living things.
On an overhead, board or chart, draw an outline of a house and discuss with students the things they need to survive. The house represents shelter. Inside the house sketch a refrigerator and a faucet which represent food and water. Outside the house sketch a fence around the yard representing space. Label each of these.
Have students compare their needs to those of the animals in each of the habitats.
Label the house diagram with words: shelter, food, water, space.
Have students discuss in smaller groups why a tiger might need more space than a goldfish and have them make other comparisons.
Discuss why wildlife areas are important to the continuation of wildlife species
In response journals, have students replicate house diagram, correctly label each basic need and list some places animals use as shelter
Assessment:
Class participation, journal
