LESSON 3

Unit:

Wetlands

Lesson:

Habitat Lap Sit

Instructional Goal:

Students will see the needs of life are interdependent

Materials:

Cards with "food," "water," "shelter," and "space", yarn to hang around neck, journals

TEKS:

2.2A,B,C,E,F   2.3A,B,C   2.9A,B

Procedure:

Review ecosystems and needs of life.

Discuss with students what might happen to an ecosystem if one of the needs was taken away.

Stress the importance of space and why there are less and less wildlife areas (farming, shopping malls, cities, roads, etc.)

Number students off by 1, 2, 3, 4.

Have students gather in groups by their number.

Label the group of ones could food, twos water, etc.

Mix up students and form a large circle by holding hands.

Slowly have them move toward the center and turn in the same direction.

Students hold the person’s waist in front of them and the entire group attempts to sit on the person’s knees behind them. (This will probably take several attempts to balance just right -- demonstrating the delicate balance in nature that forms an ecosystem!)

Have students respond in journals about the activity and compare it to a real ecosystem

Assessment:

Following directions, participation, journal
