Water in Soil


Purpose: To accurately measure using scales, To draw conclusions from data.
Season: Early Fall, Spring, Summer
Materials: Freshly dug soil, newspaper, paper, pencil, clipboard, cups, scales,
TEKS: 3.1A    3.2A thru E    3.4A,B     3.11A,B
Procedure:
  1. When first arriving at Miller Springs, dig a soil sample from several locations. Record weight and location of each cup of soil.
  2. Spread each sample on a different sheet of newspaper and place in a sunny area.
  3. Before departing, weigh the cups of soil again.
  4. Have students bring soil samples to school from locations other than Miller Springs. Children do not state the location. Weigh and dry these. From the data, ask children to determine the most likely location of these samples. Check with the student to see how accurately the data was interpreted.
Questions:
  1. What conclusions could you draw regarding the types of plants in this habitat?
  2. What animals could this habitat support?
  3. Would different times of the year affect the amount of water in the soil? different times of the day?
