observation, To expand the student's understanding of creatures in their natural
environment. |
| Season: |
Fall, spring, or summer and warm winter
days. |
| Materials: |
Old white sheet or other white
material, Small tree, bush or annual plant.
Optional: containers and handlens. |

| Procedures: |
- Divide the students into small groups.
- Put the sheet on the ground beside bushes or other mediumsized
vegetation.
- Lean the plant leaves and stems over the sheet and shake them.
- Watch the creatures that fall onto the sheet.
- Let the children check if there are leaves and other debris from
the plants or the real critters.
- Optional: Have the students collect the animals from the sheet
using the small containers. Using handlens, the students can observe and determine how
many different kinds of animals are present.
- Release the animals when finished.
