Testing Water for Acidity or Alkalinity


Purpose: To gather and compare data, To draw conclusions regarding reasons for acidity or alkalinity in water.
Season: All
Materials: Litmus paper or pH kit from a swimming pool supply company, paper, pencil, clipboard
TEKS: 6.1A     6.4A,B      6.7B
Procedure:
  1. Review how to use litmus paper.
  2. Gather samples of water from several different locations. Test using litmus paper.
  3. Record whether the waters are neutral, alkaline, or acid.
Questions:
  1. Would the time of day or time of year affect the pH? Why? Why not?
  2. What information regarding the area can be concluded from water pH?
