| Procedure: |
Review how to follow a bearing (Lost and Found--Fourth
Grade Miller Springs Curriculum).
- Be certain the children understand these guidelines: all check points are marked by
coded paper plates, degree readings are recorded on a course sheet, and a degree bearing
is established by standing DIRECTLY ON the plate.
- Give each team four paper plates and a sheet of paper to record its degree readings.
- Team A (with its plates labeled A) places its starting point plate down and decides to
go in the direction of 80. After moving in that direction for about 50 yards, a second
plate is put down and a new direction (320) is decided upon, sighted, and laid out.
- Continue this process until all four plates have been used. Team A's compass course
sheet would read as follows;
|
|
Team A Standing Pt.--80°
2nd Reading--320°
3rd Reading--165°
Instruct teams to partially cover their plates to make the courses more difficult for
the other teams to follow. After the teams have laid out heir courses, have them exchange
sheets and follow the new course. |
