Insect Hunt


Purpose: To extend observation skills
To use inductive reasoning
Season: Spring, Summer, Fall
Materials: Paper, Pencils, Clipboards
TEKS: 2.2A thru F    2.3A,B    2.8A
Procedure:
  1. Divide the children into pairs or small groups.
  2. Have each pair or group search for as many signs of insect activities as possible.
  3. Record the type of activity and where it was located.
  4. Share findings.

Background information:

Signs of insect activity may include holes in leaves, (Since there may be so many, have the children record this sign only once and tally the others unless the hole seems markedly different.) anthills, tunneling in logs, empty tent caterpillar nests, fall webworm nests, or plant galls.
