Learning About Trees


Purpose:To increase the students' descriptive writing skills through observations
To apply botanical nomenclature
Season:Early fall, spring, summer
Materials:Leaves from four different common trees (one leaf for each student), paper, pencil, clipboard, paper bag, Data Sheet(optional)
Procedure:
  1. Have each student take a leaf from the paper bag, find the other students with the same kinds of leaves, and group themselves accordingly.
  2. Each group writes describing words for their leaf. Encourage the students to use precise language.
  3. Have students put the leaves back together in a pile. Give each group a leaf description paper made by one of the groups.
  4. Have the groups read the descriptive words aloud, and find the leaf.
  5. Assign designated areas for each team.
  6. each team chooses one designated tree in the area and writes a description of the leaves - WITHOUT PULLING THE LEAVES OFF THE TREE.
  7. Trade descriptions. each team tries to find the correct tree.
  8. Estimate the number of each type of tree located at Miller Springs.
