NUMBER HIKE


Purpose: To improve students' number representation and counting.
Season: All
Materials: Clipboards, paper, pencil.
TEKS: 1.1A    1.2A,B,C,D,E
Procedure:
  1. Find and list examples of natural objects representing each number 1 to 10. Also, record objects representing numbers larger than ten.
  2. Examples - A tree has one trunk, a spider has eight legs, a bird has two wings, there are ten buzzards in a tree, Poison Ivy has three leaflets.
  3. Divide the students into pairs or small groups.
  4. Define the area or trail to be used.
  5. Have the students record the number and the object that represents it on paper.
  6. Questions: Which numbers seemed more difficult to find, odd or even numbers? Why do you think this is so?
  7. Who found the largest number of objects?
