Shape Hike


Purpose: To apply geometric knowledge in a environmental setting
To use data to create graphs
Season: All seasons
Materials: Paper, pencil, clipboard, shape chart
Procedure:
  1. Review shapes (spherical, oval, square, round, linear, rectangular, triangular, crescent, hand-shaped, heart-shaped, parallel lines, porcupine-shaped, sword-like, rope-like)
  2. Create small groups or partners.
  3. Stay in the designated area or on the designated trail.
  4. Record (or tally) objects.
  5. Tally sheets may be used to create graphs in the classroom.
Questions: Which shapes are most common in nature?
How many shapes have symmetry?
