Purpose:
Students will compare the size of land mass to the size of the ocean.
Materials: Apple per student (or partner)
Plastic knives
Globe
Procedure:
1. Explain that the globe is a model of the earth. We will be using an apple in a similar manner--as a model of the earth.
2. Cut the "earth" apple in half.
3. Cut the halves in half (fourths).
4. The ocean covers about 70% of the surface of the earth. Children separate three fourths of the apple from the one fourth.
Questions:
1. Which is greater the land or the ocean?
2. What could happen if we destroy the ocean?
