Summary:
The students will create a book that looks like a Mayan statue. It will include
information about Mayas.

Materials:
Brown construction paper (22Ó x 17 Ò), pencil, black marker, basic outline for a statue
of a Maya God, Copies of the different sections of the book Eyewitness: Aztecs, Mayas,
and Incas (make enough so students can work in groups of 3-4), writing paper for the
inside of the book

Objectives:
The student will be able to:
1. Interpret and present facts about a rain forest culture
Procedure:
1. Make copies of the different sections in the book. Place them in clear cover pockets.
This keeps them nice and clean while the kids can read them and discuss them over and
over.
2. Give each student 1 piece of construction paper. Fold the paper in half to create a journal cover.
3. Using a pencil, have the students either trace a template of a Maya stone or they can create a design of their own.
4. After designing the cover, trace over it with a black marker.
5. Next, you can glue or staple paper inside. The book is now ready for students to find information on given topics and organize it in there own book.

1. Who were some of the first explorers to encounter the rain forest cultures of Mexico?
2. Describe the region where each of the following civilizations created most of their cities.
