Procedures:
1. Get the students on line with Netscape Navigator.
2. In the location box, have the students type in the following address and go to that web site.
http://www.pbs.org/tal/costa_rica/variety.html
3. The students can work alone or in groups, depending on computer availability.
Questions:
1. What are the four levels of the forest?
2. How tall do the tallest trees grow?
3. If you were flying over the forest, which layer would you be observing?
4. What are the thick woody vines that can grow as big as a person?
5. What are some common household plants that can be found in the under story?
6. Explain why plants do not grow easy on the forest floor.
Evaluation:
The students can keep their findings in a journal or on note cards as a catalog.
Expanding the lesson:
1. Graph the height of trees in the emergent layer and the heights of trees in your
area and compare them.
2. Use the information to add to your layer book.
