SAFETY FIRST
Miller Springs Nature Center is a natural area and requires that
educators be aware of the following safety issues to insure a productive learning event
for the students.
- Make sure that all students wear long pants and appropriate shoes.
- Insects are present. Use repellent.
- Snakes may be present within the natural area. DO NOT allow students to pick snakes
up!!!
- If people leave snakes alone, they will leave you alone. Carry a large stick and insure
that sufficient noise is made to alert them to your presence. Caution students when class
work includes turning over rocks and logs.
- Should a snake bite occur, rush the patient to medical assistance immediately. It is not
necessary to cut or bleed the wound. This can cause more harm than good to the patient.
- Some persons are allergic to bee or wasps venom. Be aware of those particular persons
and keep anti-venom on hand.
- Water within the center is not deep; however banks may be slick and hazardous.
- Poison ivy, oak and sumac are present within the Center. Teach the students to recognize
these plants and avoid them.
- In the event of medical need, do not move
the patient. Please call 911 or the US Army Corps of Engineers Ranger mobil number: 760-4245.
The park has been designed for emergency vehicle access throughout. You will need to
describe where you are on the trails and what the need is!
